Chapter 1

Defining Mindset and Its Impact

Elroy Johnson

Hey hey, welcome back to “The Growth Blueprint: Elevating Personal & Professional Success.” I’m Elroy Johnson, and today, we’re diving into something that, honestly, I think is at the core of every one of those success stories we admire—mindset. I know, ‘mindset’ gets tossed around a lot, right? Folks always say, ‘change your mindset, change your life,’ but let’s talk about what that really means, not just in theory but in, like, real life.

Elroy Johnson

So, let’s start with what mindset even is. Psychologist Carol Dweck—maybe you’ve heard me mention her before, I do keep coming back to her work—she breaks mindset down into two main camps: fixed mindset and growth mindset. Fixed mindset says, 'hey, your abilities are static, you’re either good at something or you’re not.' Growth mindset, on the other hand, is all about the idea that talent can be developed, that effort and learning matter more than just natural ability.

Elroy Johnson

I mean, think about Michael Jordan. You might know the story, but it always hits home for me—he didn’t even make his high school varsity basketball team at first. That setback lit a fire. His mindset didn’t say, ‘Alright, I’m just not good enough.’ He said, ‘I’m not there yet. Not yet.’ And that’s the shift—a simple word that changes everything.

Elroy Johnson

I actually had kind of a mini-version of that when I started Expression Enterprise. Let me tell you, those early days were rough. I’m talking missed opportunities, proposals that got, like, ghosted…all the stuff that makes you question if you've got what it takes. But those failures—man, looking back, those weren’t roadblocks, they were the springboards. Every creative misstep or lost deal, I learned something. I pivoted. I started seeing the patterns, figuring out how to innovate. That reframing? That sparked real brand growth. So, however you define ‘mindset’ in your own journey, it’s not just some fluffy idea. It seriously shapes everything—how you tackle problems, what you think is possible, and how you bounce back, which leads me right into how you shift that thinking in the first place.

Chapter 2

Shifting from Fixed to Growth Thinking

Elroy Johnson

Alright, so, how do you actually move from that fixed thinking—‘I can’t do this, it’s not for me’—to something that’s more growth-fueled? The first step is getting real with those limiting beliefs. You know, those inner voices that say things like, ‘I’ll never be good at public speaking’ or ‘I’m just not cut out for leadership’? The trick, and this sounds simple but it’s huge, is just to notice those moments, to catch yourself in the act and pause.

Elroy Johnson

Here’s where it gets interesting, and it’s way more powerful than it sounds—language. The way we talk to ourselves matters: ‘not yet’ instead of ‘I can’t.’ It’s wild how just changing a few words can literally open up your brain to possibilities instead of shutting doors before you even knock. There’s a kind of magic to reframing: 'I haven’t figured this out yet,' which gives you space to grow, rather than ‘I failed.’

Elroy Johnson

And, okay, it’s not just individuals who do this. Whole companies, when they catch themselves stuck in old thinking, can totally turn a corner. Netflix, for example—they could’ve been another Blockbuster, just sticking to what worked for DVDs. But they asked, ‘Hey, what if we try streaming?’ That shift? That was embracing a growth mindset on a massive scale. And we all know how that turned out.

Elroy Johnson

In one of our earlier episodes—we talked about the power of micro-shifts, those teeny-tiny daily changes you make. Reframing your self-talk? That’s one of those micro-shifts. It’s catching yourself saying, ‘I’ll never be able to do this,’ and tacking on that, ‘yet.’ You do it once, maybe nothing happens. You do it for a month? The whole way you approach challenges, and, honestly, life itself, starts to change.

Chapter 3

Mindset in the Face of Setbacks and Challenges

Elroy Johnson

So now, let's tackle the big one—what happens when things go sideways? Because, look, nobody's growth story is without bumps. The difference? Folks who achieve lasting success treat setbacks as setups, not as the end. With a growth mindset, a challenge or failure is just a lesson wrapped in a little bit of, like, pain and inconvenience. It’s not fun, but it is valuable.

Elroy Johnson

I’m thinking of Serena Williams. There were matches she lost—frustrating, heartbreaking, all that. But those losses? She’d study them, break them down, learn, adjust, come back stronger. That’s the whole spirit of, ‘This is feedback, not a finish line.’ And that’s something I try to channel every time things don’t work out as planned—like, take PrimePath Courier. There were launches where frankly, man, I felt like I’d bitten off too much. Delays, tech not cooperating, staff issues…all of it. But I started asking, 'Alright, what’s this teaching me?' Instead of shutting down, I started documenting what worked, what didn’t, and refining the process for the next launch.

Elroy Johnson

If there’s one thing you take from today: Your mindset is the starting line, not the sideline. Every setback’s an opportunity to build resilience muscle, to learn, not just to cope. That’s the difference between stuck and unstoppable.

Elroy Johnson

So as you go into your week—heck, as you go into your next hour—check your thoughts. Challenge one fixed belief and swap that ‘can’t’ for a ‘not yet.’ See what happens. And remember, we're not trying to flip everything overnight—little by little, those mindset shifts add up. Stick with it. We’ll be back with more stories and strategies to keep building that blueprint for growth, right here. Keep moving forward, y’all.
